WE REVIEW THE NEW SINGLE FROM WREX – CONSUME

WREX are a compelling and dynamic duo hailing from Brighton. They have a skill for combining beats, aggression and attitude in a way many have tried, and failed to do. Their iconic dual vocals and raw, aggressive undertones make them a force to be reckoned with. At their core, the duo ultimately draw inspiration from mental health themes. Both in their name and throughout their songwriting. As a result of this, they smash through lyrical borders in ways most artists could only imagine. With the pair having drawn comparisons in the past to influential artists such as The Prodigy, Linkin Park and Garbage, they now prepare to release their latest single Consume, on 30th January.

The opening of Consume gives off the feeling of the rocky, gritty, electronic-driven bands of the 1990’s. Starting with a fantastic blend of a dance-fueled rhythm and a sharp serving of attitude. I really like this, it pumps you up for what’s to come. As the track moves forward, additions of heavy guitar and pounding drums elevate this track to a whole new level. Meanwhile the vocals-particularly those of Mae-are easy to listen to. They blend perfectly with the musical mash-up of an instrumental.

Personally though, I think they could have gone even heavier with the rock sound within this track. Whilst enjoyable and blending well with the dance rhythm at the start, you can tell there’s room for more attitude that would elevate the aggressive and powerful lyrics. Despite this though the track delivers a powerful punch in its message.

Ultimately the track feels like an anthem for the frustrated. Rallying up the troops and serving as a call to arms for those feeling the same resentment at what the world is becoming. Fueled by raw aggression, and a burning desire for change and freedom. In the final moments becoming particularly aggressive in its instrumentation driving the track to a powerful and fitting end.
