WE REVIEW THE NEW SINGLE FROM YOVSAF – FIEND

From Burnley to the rest of the world, self-proclaimed “nerd that rhymes words” Yovsef brings a unique rap style that sets him apart from the rest. It’s not your run-of-the-mill trap, grime, or drill. His tunes are edgier and, arguably, more sonically interesting.

This month, Yovsaf returns with his second release of 2023, and it is pretty mega.

Fiend starts off with a growing ambience bottomed out with a growling bassline. The beat overtop pulses with a crackling energy, as Yovsaf spits a swift verse. His flow is quick and natural, with each accented word giving a piece to the story.

The verse dissipates into a voicemail-style recording of an irritated female – who we can assume played a role in igniting Yovsaf’s burning attitude. He comes in again with even quicker bars, packing in almost too many words to keep up with. His fire grows while overdriven guitar and acoustic drums get added to the mix. The instrumentation balances well and makes an intriguing rap/rock hybrid.

The track absolutely goes off around 1 minute 45, where Yovsaf screams “GO!.” Each part ups the ante as his words cut through the mix. It harbours an inherently punky feel in an unusual context. It’s certainly one-of-a-kind and makes Yovsef one of the most critical voices in his game.
