It isn’t the Summer without some big dance tracks. Luckily Zara Deniz and Alex Kenby are here with their grooving piece, Funk You Want.
The London artists merge genres from funk to house to electronic and make a surreal and body-grooving piece. The track features samples from the classic house DJ Michael Gray and his iconic 00s track The Weekend. The slick guitar sample lines up tastefully as the bass guitar is the driving and funky force.
The gentle house piano is a soothing contrast to the impending upbeat dance/funk mash-up. Deniz’s vocals are a delight for the dance scene with a variety of delicate and seductive moments. It’s the kind of vocals you would expect from a classic dance track.
The male vocal contributions enable the funk side of things to take hold of the track. This section easily complements the drum and bass and whilst the drums are kept light and electric, the bass grooves up and down the scales dancing with the piano.
Not only is the track vibrant with the Summer, but it also has that classic House feeling. With that, it feels like this track could have been slotted anywhere within the last 20 years. Perhaps it’s the sampling that influences that impression, but the upbeat rap section and pianos bring out that rich and classic dance sound of the 00s.
The British music scene is always welcome to a new funk track, a genre that has certainly been on the sidelines in the UK for too long. Obviously, it’s a genre that has a huge influence on the dance scene but it’s refreshing to hear it mix so well with samples and additional vocals.
It’s a collaboration that has paid off and hopefully, Alex Kenby keeps experimenting within the dance scene. A genre that can never stop and has endless possibilities still intrigues and surprises this reviewer.
