Ship’s Cat, the indie-rock quartet from Bradford, delivers a powerful and emotive single with “Recovery Position”. Released as a teaser for their highly anticipated debut album of the same name, the song showcases the band’s ability to tackle weighty subjects while maintaining a vibrant and uplifting sound.
The track’s genesis stems from the challenging period of the COVID-19 lockdowns when Phillip Veitch, the band’s songwriter and guitarist, dealt with his wife’s extensive treatment for mental health issues. In addition, the song explores the deeply personal loss of Phillip’s younger brother to a heroin overdose, delving into themes of addiction and death. Despite the heaviness of these experiences, Ship’s Cat manages to create a cathartic experience through their music.
“Recovery Position” is a collaborative effort between Phillip and lead singer Nicky, who skillfully crafted heartfelt lyrics that resonate with listeners. The band’s dedication is evident in their meticulous approach to songwriting and recording, as they balanced family commitments and studio time. Recording at Mickey Dale’s Cellar of Dreams studios in Heaton, Bradford, Ship’s Cat expertly layered lead vocals, backing vocals, and percussion, resulting in a polished and cohesive sound.
The single itself offers a compelling musical journey. Ship’s Cat’s unique sound, characterized by their indie-rock sensibilities, blends seamlessly with the honest and introspective lyrics. The song’s instrumentation provides a solid foundation, with catchy melodies and energetic guitar riffs that capture our attention.
