New Zealand–based husband and wife duo Lexy & Mike, aka Lexyton, return with their new single ‘Stone Cold’, a track soaked in retro cinema and genuine feeling.
As the tenth track on their new album ‘Something New’, Stone Cold lands as a poetic love cry. A sickly-sweet vocal leads the way, guiding you through every shade of feeling the song has to offer. Nothing feels rushed. Instead, it invites you to sit with it and does so beautifully.
The songwriting feels pure and honest, even though it’s glittered with melancholy. Stone Cold plays with irony, capturing the strange journey of the heart. Both numb and void of feeling yet carrying a slight undertone of hurt. The music and vocals don’t shy away from it, in fact they completely embrace it.
If you’re in the mood to feel something, this one does the job. It creeps up on you, lingers, then leaves you sitting with it for a while almost like a longing shadow. Sonically, it walks a fine line. There’s that moody Cure esque tension, but it’s lifted by a cinematic intensity you’d expect from a Christopher Nolan movie soundtrack.
Released alongside an animated video featuring a vintage Felix the Cat lost in an Arctic world. The visual mirrors the song’s themes perfectly. The inspiration came from walking home in the -20 degrees cold after a night out, with transport shut down and warmth miles away.
Overall, Lexyton has carved out something fresh. From John and Yoko to Lexy and Mike, the duo clearly know their lane, yet still do things entirely their own way. With cinematic touches, strong instrumentation, and a beautiful vocal delivery, Stone Cold is certainly a winter listen you won’t want to miss.
