THE UTOPIATES - MONTEZUMA

WE REVIEW THE SINGLE FROM THE UTOPIATES – MONTEZUMA

London based band, The Utopiates are no stranger to a bit of radio air time. Their tracks have already been played on multiple stations including Radio X and BBC Radio 6, and the response has been incredibly positive. And it’s really not a surprise when they keep releasing tracks like Montezuma, the latest single they can add to their arsenal.

Montezuma is a very 80’s sounding track, what with it’s synthy sounds and electro vibe. It has echoes of Tears for Fears or Blancmange, your very traditional 80’s style. It also sounds modern as well though, finding a balance between the two to make what ends up being a catchy tune.

The bassline is on fire throughout the whole song. It sounds brilliant and is prominent even when the singing comes in and takes centre stage. The bass continuously plays along with its steady sound and gives the track its main source of life. The words sound like they float over the top effortlessly, building together with the instrumentals to create the brilliance of the track.

Tonally it’s quite a positive song, possibly because of the tinkly synth that comes in during the chorus. It’s got a bouncy energy that just instantly captivates you the moment you hit play.

The ending is a bit quieter than the rest of the track, making it a bit more haunting. It uses just bass and singing, making it a bit different from everything previously heard in the song. Rather than ending in a grand way, like lots of songs choose to do, using a final verse without the drums really focuses you on what remains and it sounds amazing.

Excitingly, The Utopiates are releasing their second album early next year, which is something to add to your diaries. It will definitely be great to hear more bangers like this one.
