Hiya Weekday Social, thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today. Grab a brew and take a seat.
Thanks for joining us today… Tell us bit about where you are from and how you got into music?
I’m Gavin, I grew up in the South West and I got into music by being fortunate enough to go to school with some unnaturally talented musicians, within a very quirky local music scene. I’m not sure any of the talent really rubbed off, but I play nonetheless.
What’s the live music scene like in London right now?
I feel like this year in particular we’ve had a pretty good run with London shows. There’s plenty of places to go and try and for each of the lousy promoters, we’ve also had cool ones. We did a nice little festival in Summer which got us out from some of the usual sweaty basements.
Anyone we should be looking out for (bar you, of course)?
Midnight Swim Club. They’re fronted by a promoter we’ve worked with a couple of times now. Louise and I saw their maiden show at Water Rats a couple of weeks back, really good fun. They can work a crowd.
Whats your thoughts on all this talk about Indie poo going round the socials at the min?
Almost a genuine spit take. Did I hear that right? Indie poo? Hahahaha! Seriously, what is that.
What’s the biggest thing you hate having to do to showcase your music?
Deal with promoters.
I’m not a big lover of the social media side of things. Having to churn out posts or something, just to look active or whatever for someone else’s benefit, can be a bit of a drag. Don’t get me wrong though, there is something satisfying about a well-received post-gig post.
What are your ambitions for the band?
Gavin: Definitely play some more out of London shows, whether that’s around the UK or a little jaunt over to Europe. Treat ourselves to something nice with whatever is in the band PayPal?
What’s your view on the Music industry today?
Ihonestly don’t think I dwell on it. We play for the joy of the game really, I’m not sure we need to stress about more of the dark side of it all at the higher level. Continuing loss of grassroots venues though, that’s a real problem. There’s less and less places to start out and potentially more and more artists jostling for that space.
Whats the biggest thing you have learned recently as you progress with your music?
It’s ok to keep revisiting something. Some songs we’ve been playing for a long time have benefitted from another look, a twist on how we play them.
It does feel sometimes that a different beat or melody feels like it’s coming through an oldie and it’s fun to chase that.
What’s currently in your ears and on rotation at the moment?
“Authority Song” (Jimmy Eat World), “Please You” (The So and So’s), “Don’t Do It!” (DellaXOZ)
What was your worst experience on stage? Any funny stories to share?
I think I’ve actually been pretty lucky (touch wood). The odd voice crack or bum note, always a laugh but there was a gig where Louise couldn’t hear her guitars or vocals during the first few songs where the sound engineer didn’t show up and some guy from behind the bar was drafted in instead. She is still annoyed about it!
I hear you have new music. What can you tell us about it?
Ben: Louise can take this one.
It’s a track called “So Close” that I wrote years ago and played with an old band of mine. It’s been reworked and definitely has more of a Fall Out Boy-esque kind of sound to it now. Ben’s drums really drive it along and I’ve added a call/response punky vocal. Gavin gets to play around on the bass, which keeps him happy.
It came out on September 15th, right between Louise and I’s birthdays.
Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?
Listen to us! Come and see us! We’ll be doing a few more shows before the year is out!
