BURIAL AT SEA, MUGSTAR AND ALL MAUDRA LIVE – WHAT HAPPENED?

Openers All Maudra have a hard job on their hands starting the gig off for two high intensity bands but they manage it and shift us in a different direction. It’s jangly then jagged sparse Indie meets shoe gaze and its different enough for them to put their own stake in the ground on tonight’s bill.

The three piece consist of two guitars and a bass wit hall member contributing vocally at various times. They explore the rhythmic elements of their ethereal melodies and with a relatively quiet sound grip the audience. Fascinating with hints of danger and beauty.

Mugstar have been away too long and tonight they blast into the firmament of Future Yard and launch us on their sonic trip to outer an inner space. Mugstar are one of the key bands that have defined modern heavy psych but thats not to dismiss their looking over their shoulder at their own influences. The Hawkwind references are all still intact and if you wanted to go deep enough you could find anything from Black Sabbath to Neu! and they were Damo Suzukis backing band on his fantastic improvised sets many times.

What separates them from the pack though is their sheer intensity, nuanced delicate guitar notes float over a barrage of repetitive bass lines before morphing in heavier than God riffs that meld perfectly with atmospheric and startlingly heavy drums. Some ‘songs’ consist of drum patterns that many percussionists would have down as fills or solo’s but here are repeated for the entire track.

Burial at Sea are an enigma, the albums show a flair for delicacy that soars up into a shoe gaze or grungy volume, a roar of noise. Live the noise is to the fore but it still eaves plenty of room for so much else thats going on. Described as a bit shoegazy, math rock, post rock and many other epithets Burial at Sea bound across genres with brass led tracks and then full on metallic tinged moments.

There’s complex guitar patterns with plenty of room for other instruments and a tour de force of drums that give the band power to spare.  An uplifting experience live, music that soars above the commonplace, creative, constantly shifting and deep.
