WHINGE, SLAB AND FILTHYDIRTY PLAY 33 OLDHAM STREET MANCHESTER – WHAT DID YOU MISS? | RGM : REYT GOOD MAGAZINE Music News | Breaking Music Stories & Industry Updates

The duo that are FilthyDirty produce a lot of noise, there’s many slabs of industrial meets techno computer generated noises and a guitarist who elevates the sound with stabs of heavy psych riffing and more random noises but it the vocalist who glues it all together.

With full nightmare clown face makeup and wearing an ill fitting almost Las Vegas lounge act white tuxedo getup he prowls the stage delivering lines like ‘All my friends are cunts’ in a genuinely discomforting manner. I found it both transfixing and uncomfortable. The savage lyrics are knowing, sarcastic, humorous and downright explosive all at the same time. Music you could dance through to the end of the world.

Slab have been kicking up volumes of sound fora while now and tonight is another tight as hell tour de force in how to be a band. The heavy psych sounds stand out most but there’s elements of anything from Muse to Radiohead hidden in there as well as the more obvious Sonic Youth.

Their sound Pulsates and builds constantly through each song, simple motifs from the guitar start to overlap and sound most un guitar like whilst the bass thunders away. Special mention to the drums, tight, machine like and beautifully delivered providing the soul behind the Slab sound, just exquisite.

Whinge are unique, the guitarist warms up with Kyuss riffs and the band shamble about in a disorganised way until they suddenly gel together and the drums kick off the first track. Then its a 30 odd minute roller coaster ride of garage rock, metal, blues and savagery! With a front person who believes taking it to the audience and then into the audience is his credo. It’s a truly interactive experience.

Is it psych, is it punk, is it garage, who cares. What it is is truly entertaining and more than a little breathtaking. They bang out musical references and move on before you’ve truly identified them, said front person is channeling Jim Morrison meets Johnny Vegas and the band play excellently delivering great songs one after the other until bang its over and you want more.
