WILDLY RAUCOUS DIRTY LACES HEADLINE – WHAT WENT DOWN IN MANCHESTER?

Ferociously heavy, brooding and with touches of the psychedelic. It’s been a little while since I last caught Dirty Laces live. Last night at Soup, Manchester, they were tighter, sharper and more accomplished than ever in one of the most intimate sets I’ve seen them deliver.

The set opened with a smoking cover of Link Wray’s Rumble. And then on to a screamer of a track with Laces classic, Back Of The Time, which really got the crowd moving. Frontman Charlie full of energy ripping into those passionate rock vocals.

Indeed each of the lads really got their moments to impress. Good to see Charlie playing some rhythm guitar these days (especially when his tambourine was commandeered by one of the crowd!) Luke Dec’s lead guitar was mesmerising with a heavy rock attack: Sabbath, Hendrix, Jack White vibe. Tom’s bass felt more bold and menacing than ever, especially on hard anthems like Midnight Mile. Good to see him adding some vocals too. Luke O’Reilly’s drumming was sensational as always: those thunderous toms and biting snare inflections really packed a punch on tracks like Exile. He can really rip!

It was brilliant to hear how some of the newer songs mixed into the set too. There were two heavy new tracks: Truth and Wait. One of the best tracks of the set was If I Go from the most recent Impasse EP. Where many of the tracks had that heavy attack, this one was passionate in an almost Richard Hawley or Roy Orbison manner.

The set ended as ever with the epic You. It’s a real killer romp from brooding beginnings,  to an epic psych rock clatter of a finale with guitar, bass, and drums at full pelt. Pure class!
