With the release of their album coming up fast, you seriously don’t want to miss hearing Leathers track Party People as a little preview into what is to be expected. Spoiler alert; it’s very good.
Party People transports you back to the 70’s, this groovy riff merged with a punky soundscape just capturing your attention. It falls somewhere between the sounds of The B-52s and The Fall, seemingly heavily influenced by both.
You aren’t immediately hit with the surf rock riff, instead the song begins with a drumbeat, then builds up with the riff and then is joined by the vocals. This allows you to get a bit of time with every part of the track, although the riff remains the most important component, always the loudest part of the song. You can’t help but pay attention to it.
And it remains a constant throughout, only straying slightly to a choppy chord structure when the lyrics change and aren’t exclusively singing, “all my party people”. There is certainly no denying the title of the track.
The repetition, simplicity and consistency are what hooks you. The lack of lyrics doesn’t feel like a loss as they are almost indistinguishable anyway due to the very distorted sound. You can’t tell if the singer is a metre away from the microphone or so close that he may as well be eating it, but it sounds epic regardless.
The vocals do get layered at times as well which definitely helps create a bigger sound, and it acts a build up of sorts so the song has no chance of feeling stale. This is the last word you would think of to describe this track as it is just a brilliant sound from start to end. It is something different and therefore stands out for all the right reasons, the main one being that it is done in an incredible way.
