Hiya James, thanks for joining us in the virtual RGM lounge today. Grab a brew and take a seat. Thanks for joining us today… Tell us bit about where you are from and how you got into music?
Hey mate, thanks for having me. I’m from Adelaide, South Australia. I guess I got into music from my parents always playing great music around the house when I was growing up. I went to an Ed Sheeran concert when I was around 12 years old, and that really got me inspired to start writing my own songs.
What’s the live music scene like in Adelaide right now?
It’s great honestly. Lots of beautiful venues, I’ve had the pleasure to play at some beautiful wineries down in McClaren Vale. The Live music scene is a growing space, very exciting to be a part of.
Anyone we should be looking out for (bar you, of course)?
There’s plenty of great up and coming artists, Andy Mck comes to mind. I’ve been able to play a few shows with him, his songwriting is top tier. Hugh Smith, he is also a really talented Sax player and producer. Plenty of talent in Adelaide.
What are your ambitions for your career?
I would love to just be able to make a living off my music. I don’t want to be a superstar. If I’m able to make music I enjoy and play in beautiful venues for the rest of my life, I would be a very happy man.
What’s your view on the Music industry today?
I’m still very new to the industry, I think the fact there’s so many ways to get your music out there is awesome. At the same time though I guess it makes it harder for independent artists to be heard when there is just so much music out there.
Whats your thoughts on AI generated music?
Rubbish. Art has and always will be the expression of human emotion and interpretation. A machine will never be able to replace that. AI music is soul less.
Whats the biggest thing you have learned recently as you progress with your music?
I think to trust my gut and know that I am enough. You get so many different opinions from people about your own music and your performances, you just have to know that sometimes those things might be valid- but you have to not take it all to heart.
What’s currently in your ears and on rotation at the moment?
Well I’m always listening to Michael Jackson, he is my favourite artist of all time. I’ve been getting into a bit of 70’s Stevie Wonder, really enjoying the Innervisions album. I really enjoyed Gracie Abrams’ album that came out the other week, and I loved Harry Styles and Noah Kahan’s new albums that came out this year as well.
I hear you have new music. What can you tell us about it?
Yeah I have a new album called Of God. Each song is super personal to me, I always write my songs with just me and an acoustic guitar and I write heaps of songs and I picked these and thought they would hopefully be a cohesive project. I feel like the quality is definitely a step up from my last album.
What was the recording process like?
This whole album was recorded from home, All these songs were recorded in my bedroom and it’s all just me and a guitar.
Would you change anything now it’s finished?
No, I love all these songs a lot.
Is there anything else you would like to share with the world?
If you’re into singer-songwriter folky sort of music, feel free to listen to my new album Of God!
